Progressive Democrats of America is among a leading a coalition of organizations including True Majority, USAction, Backbone Campaign, and Democrats.com to defeat the Wall Street bailout. This week, PDA is calling on its 140,000 members to continue nation-wide actions, specifically visiting their Congress members' local offices to get them on record in support of a Fair Deal for Main Street. PDA members are also thanking Representatives who voted against the bail out and asking them to hold firm opposing this new version.
PDA National Director Tim Carpenter said, "The Senate put some lipstick on it but their 'Rescue Plan' is still a blank check bailout. We can't let Congress sell out to greedy fat cats. We have a second chance to defeat it in the House; the vote is expected by Friday."
Carpenter explains, "If a Representative voted yes the first time around, then a chance for redemption exists. That representative should support a Fair Deal for Main Street, rather than a giveaway for Wall Street. We're working to defeat this terrible bailout bill and provide protection for the average taxpayer in these vulnerable times by calling on our members to take action this week."
PDA and coalition partners are mobilizing more than a half-million activists using online resources to guarantee a successful office visit. Resources include a website to find their Representative's local office, a record of how they voted on the bill, talking points, and an online visit scheduler. PDA is asking our members to report on their visit, and will publish a report of these actions.
Progressive Democrats of America is a grassroots PAC that works both inside the Democratic Party and outside in movements for peace and justice. Our goal: Elect a permanent, progressive majority in 2008. PDA's advisory board includes seven members of Congress and activist leaders such as Tom Hayden, Medea Benjamin, Thom Hartmann, Jim Hightower, and Rev. Lennox Yearwood.
