FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Wednesday, May 07, 2008
Washington, DC
With Democratic congressional leaders poised to push through yet another Iraq war funding bill as a political ploy to gain a perceived election-year advantage over Republicans, Progressive Democrats of America is saying “Enough!” and taking to the streets to elect progressives who will end the war, not play politics with the lives of American soldiers and the Iraqi people.
On May 17 and May 24, PDA members and supporters will be joining with our endorsed congressional candidates for a “Healthcare NOT Warfare Canvass”--helping out the campaigns by hitting high Democratic-propensity precincts, knocking on doors, and distributing fliers.
The canvassers also will be telling their neighbors about the Healthcare NOT Warfare campaign, asking them to sign the online petition and to only support Democratic candidates who will vote for Healthcare NOT Warfare. At the same time, PDAers are contacting their representatives in Congress to put them on notice that their most active constituents will be voting only for anti-war, pro-single payer healthcare Democratic candidates, and will be canvassing their neighbors to convince them to do the same.
“In 2006, the voters of this country gave Congress a clear mandate to end the occupation of Iraq through a stunning Democratic electoral victory, which PDA is proud to have contributed to,” said PDA Executive Director Tim Carpenter. “But now, in 2008, we're still waiting for the war to end, while conditions get worse both here and in Iraq. To put it bluntly, if this Congress won't stand up and put an immediate end to the occupation of Iraq, and start addressing our needs at home beginning with a national single payer healthcare system, then we'll elect Democratic candidates who will.”
Carpenter pointedly singled out Donna Edwards--who defeated long-time incumbent Rep. Al Wynn, a corporate inside-the-beltway Democrat, in the Maryland primary--as one of the candidates PDA will be canvassing for.
Progressive Democrats of America is a grassroots PAC that works both inside the Democratic Party and outside in movements for peace and justice. Its goal is to elect a permanent, progressive majority in Congress. More information is available at http://www.pdamerica.org.
