CA and NM First Two State Democratic Parties to Demand Troop Withdrawal

Vol. 2, No. 4--May 11, 2005

In the past two weeks, the California and New Mexico Democratic parties have passed resolutions demanding an end to the US occupation of Iraq.

Leading up to the California State Democratic Convention, Progressive Democrats of America (PDA) and dozens of partners and allied organizations worked in their assembly districts to pass resolutions advocating withdrawal. At the April 15-17 convention, PDA activists and allies drafted a resolution sythesizing the demands of the varied district-level statements. An ad hoc group emerged out of the resolutions committee, led by PDA activists and called the Progressive Issues Caucus. This group successfully and democratically appointed a spokesperson to address the convention. The resolution, as passed, is available here.

California provided momentum for New Mexico, where the state Democratic Party passed a similar resolution the next week. This effort, too, was led by PDA members. Here's the resolution.

PDA intends to push for passage of similar resolutions by additional states in the coming weeks and months. To get involved, go to our home page.

PDA also urges you to contact your congress member and ask for their support for House Resolution 35, calling for an end to the occupation.
