Nevada State News
Vol. 2, No. 4--May 11, 2005
We here at the Nevada Progressive Democrats of America in Vegas have been busy and active. We have many projects we are working on. We were in our Congressional Representative Shelley Berkley's office twice about the bankruptcy law this month. We knew she was supporting it and then after the vote tally we see that she abstained from voting.
We are close to securing a date to appear before the City Council about an anti-Patriot Act resolution we have been working on with a coalition of other human rights groups. The FBI used the Act as a way to obtain close to 300,000 tourist records during the time close to New Years Eve 2003. That hardly supports the ad campaign "What happens in Vegas, Stays in Vegas."
We had the honor of supporting Amy Goodman of Democracy Now! during her book
signing and "Unembed the Media" tour stop here in Las Vegas. It was wonderful to hear her speak and see her again. We are in the midst of a campaign to get Democracy Now! on local access tv and radio.
We are supporting Las Vegas Peace Now by documenting their march on May 1st
at the Las Vegas strip. The last march proved to be a bit dangerous as the police used undue force against peaceful demonstrators and over twenty of them were arrested and detained. All charges have been dropped but it is essential to have documentations of these events for this reason and others.
We are also working with Peace Alliance on the Dept. of Peace campaign by participating in the Mother's Day action by taking pies to our reps local offices with the theme being "Peace Wants a Piece of the Pie" (National Budget Pie).
We are scheduling a big outreach meeting for people interested in being a part of our PDAmerica group for June. In the meantime anyone interested in helping with any of our projects are welcome to give us a call: 702-812-7957.
