Vol. 2, No. 1--Pre-Summit, January 2005

Northeast Ohio Area Progressives on the move: ("We" is PDA collective)

We are growing, and becoming aware of numerous budding & established amazing efforts in Portage, Medina, Cuyahoga and Summit counties! As we strengthen the lines of communication statewide, I look forward to a more complete summary of state activities being posted. Please see the bottom of this report for Ohio contacts.

Freedom Winter Bus Tour: After returning from its successful Press Conference and lobbying effort in DC last week, The We Do Not Concede Organization is regrouping and will be returning to DC to lobby Congress by eternal vigilance on the issue of election reform. Details are developing as we coordinate with disenfranchised and affected communities statewide. If you have something to contribute, please in Cleveland.

We Do Not Concede bus riders from Columbus attended the PDA rally in LaFayette Park, and many have newly volunteered for PDA. Professional photographs of the riders and the rallies are available. or call 614.262.4098. Allan is a professional photographer who shot the original Selma march.

The Green Libertarian Northeastern Region will hold its recap and "next steps" meeting on Saturday, January 15 from 2:00-4:00 PM. Over 350 organizers and volunteers will gather to discuss future affiliations with other coalitions and next steps. This group is on fire and dedicated to pursuing election reform from these early beginnings through national implementation. On the agenda are the PDA Summit and its accountability statement. Please if you are interested in attending.

We are developing a Web site for The Ohio Progressive Caucus and have identified key people and over 200 volunteers new to the PDA in 6 counties so far. We will be looking forward to holding a statewide sit-down after the Progressive Summit to get input from all groups. Summit County has definitely taken the lead in organizing County Democrats towards a progressive vision! Thanks to Michael Carano for being such an active asset; we will look for his guidance when incorporating state bylaws and mission.

Ohio is looking to add 88 county organizers to establish the Ohio Progressive Caucus. The web site is being developed as we speak and should launch within the next 2-3 weeks. The site will provide a place where all state wide progressive organizations can network to develop the Bylaws of the Caucus.

A group of 40 leaders of Progressive Organizations will sit down this Saturday, January 15th at The Joining Forces Potluck. We have put together an exciting strategic plan that has been developed over the last 2 years on how best to coordinate activities region-wide to maximize effectiveness--mostly on Peace and Justice issues. I look forward updating you about their involvement with PDA and new organizational partners in the next issue. The Web site is also under construction. Pardon our dust, but the majority of NE Ohio organizers in the Progressive movement have been myopically focused on election-related issues. In a coordinated effort last year, we successfully passed our True Majority-style graph flyers on how your tax dollars are really spent to all at regional post offices. We look forward to many more area-wide actions in the future!

We are organizing 2 bus trips to the Inauguration on Jan 20th. Buses are leaving from Kent and Cleveland. Please , and .

The Democracy for America meet up has regrouped in Cleveland and meets the first Tuesday of the month at Trinity Cathedral {corner of E 22nd and Euclid, downtown} at 7:00 PM. We will be working closely with them in the near future-- for details.

The Cleveland Nonviolence Network has been diligently planning next year's Labor Day Peace Show. This growing family-oriented art and entertainment show has become a fast growing family alternative to the air show. If you are interested in planning please .

CLEVELAND, OH--On Monday, January 17, teens and adults will celebrate the legacy and dream of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a day on--not a day off. Incorporating reflection, community building and volunteer service, the annual Dr. King Day of Service begins at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral at 9:30 AM. All are welcome to participate.

The day begins with group activities teaching the value of diversity. Judge Patricia Ann Blackmon of the Cuyahoga County Court of Appeals will speak about Dr. King's legacy in her life and work. Her address will be followed by a dramatic presentation on the life of Gandhi, by Bernard Meyer. Every participant under 21 will be provided with a free lunch. Adults can purchase a lunch or bring one with them. Following lunch, participants will have the option of doing volunteer service or joining in a workshop. Volunteer activities include working at the Collinwood Area Church Council Hunger Center, doing social activities at Franklin Plaza Nursing Home and the Hospice of the Western Reserve, and helping prepare for the annual Homeless Stand-Down. The Episcopal Diocese of Cleveland is arranging workshops. As the day closes, participants can share memories in a time capsule to be opened during the 2006 Day of Service.

Registration for the day begins at 9:00 AM at Trinity Commons, East 22nd and Prospect. Ample free and secure parking is available. Each participant is asked to bring a nonperishable food item or a pair of new or gently used men's gloves as their entrance "fee." These items will be donated to the volunteer service sites. The day closes at 4:00 PM at Trinity Commons. Youth and adults 12 years old and older are encouraged to attend. For youth under 12, please call ahead. Every pre-registered participant will receive a commemorative T-shirt. To pre-register, or call Catherine Donnelly at (216) 361-5890.
