Save Social Security

Vol. 1, No. 6--December 23, 2004

The Bush administration's plan to privatize Social Security will create a social disaster by pushing the burden of managing the country's retirement and disability security system onto the tax-payers. Given current economic complexities, it is unlikely most Americans would be able to "invest" successfully in their newly formed private accounts. Credible research, found in the articles below, shows that privatizing Social Security will lead to negative effects for youth, retirees, the elderly, women, African Americans and Latin Americans. The only clear winner would be Wall Street, and that doesn't sound like a good idea to us.

What You Can Do:

  1. Read these articles and explain to your friends and colleagues: (1) Why privatizing Social Security isn't just a bad idea, it's a recipe for disaster, and (2) That Social Security is NOT in crisis, and doesn't need an immediate overhaul.
  2. Contact your Congress members and ask them to oppose Bush's plan. If you don't already have their contact information, you can find it here. Just enter your zip code under Congress and President, then click Go.
  3. Stay tuned to this web site. As Bush moves forward with his plan, we'll keep you up-to-date concerning further actions you can participate in.
