Alabama State News
Vol. 1, No. 5--December 4, 2004
Wow! It was amazing to see all of you at the meeting on Sunday. Did you know we had this many committed progressives in Alabama? I thank each of you for coming, and adding your energy and insights to the group.
Our crowd of about 120 people included Democrats, Independents and Greens from various areas including Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Huntsville, Montgomery and Auburn.
As you all know, we have lots to do in our state--especially after the Nov. 2nd election. Someone asked why we are forming when the odds appear to be against us, and my response was, "because there is no other choice." If we don't do this, it won't get done. The answer for Democrats is not to move to the center--instead we must be steady in our commitment to the principles we hold dear. Our importance will become more and more evident to Alabamians as we move forward into the second Bush administration.
Ready for action? See below about joining an APD committee and/or starting your own local progressive group.
For those who missed the meeting, please see the "Issues" item below. We want to know what you think we should address!
Our next statewide meeting is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, January 15 at a location to be set. Stay tuned for details.
I look forward to working with each of you as we gather our momentum and turn this state around!
Progressively yours,
Linda Haynes
