Progressive Groups Create Potential Kerry Cabinet:
Actively Seeking Nominations

Buoyed by the immense wave of grassroots activity this election season, a national coalition of progressive political organizations has launched "The Backbone Cabinet," a roster of potential cabinet secretaries for a Kerry administration or as an alternative voice regardless of the administration. Led by the Backbone Campaign, the Progressive Government Institute, and Progressive Democrats of America, these groups have created a website where people can nominate qualified individuals for key policy-making positions such as the Secretaries of State, Education, Defense, Housing, and Health and Human Services.
"Progressives are shaping this very tight election, and are having a huge influence on Kerry's success," says Bill Moyer, Executive Director of the Backbone Campaign. "We see a Kerry victory as a mandate for progressive values. We intend to provide the Senator with potential cabinet secretaries who support those values." The Backbone Cabinet web site encourages participants to rate and comment on the qualifications of potential cabinet members, affording visitors a chance to learn about and have a greater investment in the makeup of the government as a whole.
