Keeping the peace in the White House
01/25/2009
...Tim Carpenter, the national political director of the Progressive Democrats of America, said the Jones appointment irked the party’s left wing because Obama did not try to offset his views with a more liberal pick on the security team.
“What we’re wondering aloud is why President Obama has so rigorously selected top advisers and Cabinet members who favored the [Iraq] invasion and who have shown very few signs of subsequently rejecting what Obama has called the ‘mind-set’ that led us into war in the first place,” Carpenter said...

MOST VALUABLE POLITICAL GROUP: Progressive Democrats of America
Paul Wellstone's "Democratic Wing of the Democratic Party" finally has a functional voice, in the form of PDA, a national group that has over the past several years struggled mightily – and often effectively – to pull the party to the left on issues of war and peace, health-care reform, economic justice and presidential accountability...

Liberals Wonder When Obama’s Team Will Reflect Them
12/09/2008
Tim Carpenter, national director of Progressive Democrats of America, which was founded in 2004 out of frustration with Senator John Kerry’s position on the Iraq war, said the retention of Mr. Gates was “startling” and complained that as Mr. Obama builds his team, “everybody he’s bringing in is to the right of him.” But he expressed cautious optimism.
“Change is in the air,” Mr. Carpenter said. “The question is what kind of change. We hope Barack Obama will be a more progressive president.”
Liberals Voice Concerns About Obama
12/08/2008
“He has confirmed what our suspicions were by surrounding himself with a centrist to right cabinet. But we do hope that before it's all over we can get at least one authentic progressive appointment,” said Tim Carpenter, national director of the Progressive Democrats of America.
Left, Right Continue Assault On Bailout; McCain Warned Against Supporting Plan
09/25/2008
President Bush's warning to the nation that the United States faces a "financial panic" hasn't convinced those on either the right or left who oppose his proposal for a $700 billion economic bailout. In fact, one conservative activist sternly warned Republican John McCain not to support the current rescue package.
The progressive organization Democrats of America (PDA) is joining "scores of others" in organizing events today to protest the planned bailout, according to an email from PDA National Director Tim Carpenter.

Orange's David Sonneborn isn't your typical Democrat showing up in Denver for the national convention this week.
Since retiring from teaching university biology in 2003, Sonneborn has devoted his time to researching and promoting legislative changes on issues like universal health care, withdrawal from Iraq war, and campaign finance reform.
But his time in Denver is not being spent at the convention's Pepsi Center events. Instead, Sonneborn is set up a few blocks a few blocks away at the Central Presbyterian Church, where the Progressive Democrats of America are holding something of an alternative convention.
Platform Fight: Activists Win Commitment to Guaranteed Care
08/09/2008
...Obama's camp, which dominates but does not entirely control the platform-writing process, wanted to avoid talk of guarantees. It also wanted language that was friendlier to the insurance industry. Progressive Democrats for America, working in conjunction with a number of Pennsylvania organizations and Democratic leaders that support single-payer health care, pushed for a deeper commitment to health-care reform...
