Act Like Christians
11/16/2004
By Barbara Ehrenreich - For the next four years and well beyond, liberals and progressives will need to emulate the original Christians, who stood against imperial Rome with their bodies, their hearts and their souls.

Reclaiming the Democratic Party - Paging Dr. Dean
11/15/2004
by Salvador Peralta - The fight to restore true democracy in America starts with the fight for control of the Democratic party. If the DLC manages to place another one of their candidates at the top of the Democratic party after the worst 12 year period in the history of the party, the prospects for progressive populism in this country will be grim indeed. The Progressive Trail joins with Democracy for America, Blue Oregon, and the Progressive Democrats of America in supporting the candidacy of Dr. Howard Dean for DNC Chair. Dean is one of the few people mentioned for the position who does not owe the bulk of his status to party insiders; has demonstrated his ability to raise money on the campaign trail by connecting with voters, and he has it right on fair trade, the war with Iraq, and a host of other issues of concern for the American progressive movement.

Learning from the Loss
11/13/2004
51 percent is no mandate. Maybe the Republicans were confusing the outcome with a mandate from heaven (more on that later), but as soon as the polls closed their propaganda machinery began repeating the mantra of mandate, using the mass media as an echo chamber. By the next day, Grover Norquist was announcing that America is a "Republican majority country," and you could hear him squelching the urge to say "love it or leave it."

Progressives: Get Ready to Fight
11/11/2004
By: Robert L. Borosage & Katrina vanden Heuvel - In the coming months, progressives can drive the response to Bushs victory, just as the right drove the response to Clintons. Thus we must take a close look at 2004, what we can build on and where we should go.

Go Noam (No Ralph)!
09/19/2004
This quote comes from a recent e-mail sent out by Progressive Democrats of America--just one of a slew of groups, including Greens for Kerry, Repentant Nader Voters and United Progressives for Victory--making the case that even if you agree with Ralph Nader and/or the Greens on the issues, the paramount priority is to (re)defeat Bush in November.

Shoulder to Shoulder - Truthout
08/03/2004
Three organizations have risen from the Dean and Kucinich campaigns: Democracy for America, Progressives Democrats for America, and Progressive Vote. Right now, these three organizations are trying to meld themselves into a cohesive entity, a force to be reckoned with, a platform for power politics within the Democratic Party in the best traditions of what Howard Dean and Dennis Kucinich were hoping to achieve. They need to join and then fundraise for one of the three progressive organizations which rose from the campaigns, and do everything in their power to help those organizations work together. Candidates come and go, no matter how righteous. Advocacy organizations - think NOW or NARAL - last through it all if properly formulated and funded.

En Masse and On Message - In These Times
07/30/2004
But I soon realized that the real action of the Democratic National Convention wasn’t to be found inside the Fleet Center or in the marble lobby of the Sheraton. It was found in a series of events around Boston—from Kucinich rallies to Campaign for America’s Future forums, to the Progressive Democrats of America Convention—in which progressives gathered to consecrate and build a political movement that will both elect John Kerry this fall and create the institutional underpinnings for a broad progressive mandate. And if that energy and grassroots innovation wasn’t at the center of the party itself, the writing on the wall is clear: It’s coming.

Support for Kucinich hints at party divisions - Press Herald
07/30/2004
Kucinich created such a strong impression that Williams traveled to Boston for a convention Thursday, though not the one at the FleetCenter. Instead, Williams participated in the Progressive Democrats of America convention across the city in Roxbury to pursue universal health care and reduced military spending.

Left Comes Full Circle From Chicago '68 - NY Times
07/28/2004
Liberals in groups like the Progressive Democrats of America have crowded into Boston to pursue several strategies. Many are trying to push the Democratic Party and Mr. Kerry further to the left. Many support Mr. Kerry's goal of building a broad, unified Democratic Party to maximize the chances of winning. And many see their role as helping woo Nader supporters into the fold. "We know that we progressive Democrats may well be the difference in the election," Mr. Kucinich said. "We're going to reach out and help put up that big tent. We will ensure that John Kerry wins by showing those who would otherwise vote for Ralph Nader that there is a place for them in the Democratic Party."

Liberal groups seek role at convention - "Political News Digest"/Chattanooga paper
07/25/2004
WASHINGTON - Even as the Kerry-Edwards presidential ticket reaches out to the philosophical center, liberal groups and their Hollywood allies are planning to urge a leftward turn at next week's Democratic National Convention. "The Democratic Party needs our help to regain its soul," Mimi Kennedy, who plays a counterculture mom on the ABC-TV sitcom "Dharma and Greg," said in a statement announcing the formation of Progressive Democrats of America, one of many new groups forming in the party's left wing. The progressive group, which also boasts the endorsements of actor Ed Asner and political activist Tom Hayden, has set an official launch for Boston's Roxbury neighborhood on July 29, the day that Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts is slated to accept his party's nomination.
