From Congress to union halls: Demand widens: Exit Iraq!
06/23/2005
WASHINGTON — "Let Conyers in!" the crowd chanted at the White House gate the evening of June 16. Rep. John Conyers Jr. (D-Mich.) and a dozen other lawmakers had come to deliver petitions signed by 566,000 people demanding that President George W. Bush answer for the so-called Downing Street Memo proving that he "fixed" intelligence to justify war on Iraq.

Movement takes Bush to task
06/23/2005
An online movement of bloggers and political activist groups is trying to keep the Downing Street memos in the public eye and stoking support for a congressional investigation.

Dems Break with Pelosi
06/21/2005
It was the week that Washington woke up to the war. Politicians were climbing over each other to announce their plans for peace. In the most stunning development, Maxine Waters led a rebellion against House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, and formed the impromptu "Out of Iraq" caucus. Rep. John Conyers continued his steady leadership by chairing a hearing on the Downing Street Memoranda, attended by over 25 members in a tiny basement room forced on them by a peeved Republican leadership. Conyers and other members then took 500,000 petitions to the White House gates before addressing a rally in Lafayette Park.

Progressives to unveil 'core principles'
06/21/2005
A group of House Democrats will unveil a set of goals dubbed "The Progressive Promise" next week in an effort to put liberal priorities higher on the Democratic agenda and offer an alternative to conservatives' vision of an "ownership society."

June 2005: Phase II of the Anti-War Movement
06/20/2005
For the history books, mark down June 2005 as the moment the US movement against the occupation of Iraq got its second wind. In June, the US public became solidly anti-war, Bush's approval rating took a nosedive, and a significant number of Congresspeople started to call for an exit strategy. This marks a seismic shift from just one month ago, when Congress overwhelmingly passed another $82 billion for war-with only 44 members of the House and not one Senator dissenting.

Bush pressed to answer 'Downing Street Memo' questions
06/16/2005
WASHINGTON - A hearing Thursday on a secret British intelligence memo that said President Bush was committed to waging war on Iraq months before he said so publicly ended with a request for Congress to open an inquiry into whether Bush should be impeached for misleading the nation. "All we're asking is to know the truth," said John Bonifaz, co-founder of AfterDowningStreet, org. "Some of his supporters want to say it's a question of failed intelligence. If that's all it was, so be it."

Woolsey Rocks The House
05/26/2005
It is a tale of a GOP maneuver gone horribly wrong-for them. The House leadership gave Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey, D-Calif., 30 full minutes for the debate of her ammendment that would require President Bush to plan and implement an exit strategy in Iraq-a pullout. Not only was this the first time the House debated withdrawal, but when the smoke had cleared, 128 members, including five Republicans had voted in favor of the amendment. Most notably on the GOP side was Rep. Walter Jones, R-N.C., who, you may recall, was the member behind the "Freedom Fries" resolution in the run-up to the war. He's now completely changed his tune, saying he was deceived into supporting the war.

Bankruptcy Bill on Brink of Enactment
04/14/2005
WASHINGTON - If you’re a debtor who has amassed unpaid bills, life is about to get tougher for you. The House of Representatives is poised Thursday to pass the most complete revision of bankruptcy law since 1978...."Clearly there are some Democrats and many Republicans who place the interests of corporations above those of citizens," said David Swanson, an activist with Progressive Democrats of America, who organized the anti-bankruptcy bill web site, DebtSlavery.org.

Picking Up Where the Rainbow Left Off
01/30/2005

"I am the New Hampshire caucus," Max Gordon tells me with a grin. She'd come from her hometown of Atkinson (pop. 6,178) to Washington, DC, for the national summit of the fledgling Progressive Democrats of America, looking for allies...

Champagne and Pepper Spray Herald Bush's Return
01/20/2005
NEW YORK, Jan 20 (IPS) - There is the Freedom Ball, the Patriot Ball and the Democracy Ball. Not tired yet? How about the Independence Ball, Liberty Ball, Stars and Stripes Ball, Texas Wyoming Ball, and Commander-In-Chief Ball.
