Hit The Streets And The Suites!

Admittedly, it’s a pretty low bar to beat when you’re up against a racist who spews insults like “shithole countries”, but we focus on the young Dreamers who are demanding a clean Dream Act for our “Who Trumps Trump” message this week.

After organizing a jail strike over the holidays, the huge #OurDream coalition — of which we at PDA are proud to be a part — is organizing visits and sit ins at targeted congressional offices and rallies in the street to bring home the gold when congress votes on the spending bill Friday.

The thought that totally law-abiding, hard-working, young people who only make our communities stronger and more productive could be risking deportation from the country they know as home is unconscionable.

Imagine if someone knocked on your door in the middle of the night and said, “We’re here to deport you.  Pick a country.”  What would you do?

Well, the good news is: that probably isn’t going to happen to you.  Yet.

But as a white native born, at times like these I think of Martin Niemöller: the prominent Protestant pastor who stood up against the Nazis, and who spent the last 7 years of the regime in concentration camps.

“First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Socialist.”

“Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Trade Unionist.”

“Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Jew.”

“Then they came for me—And there was no one left to speak for me.”

Time for all of us to speak and stand for these Dreamers.

Thank you so much for anything you can do.

In solidarity,

Mike Fox for Donna, Mike H., Janis, Deb, Kim, Bryan, Dan, Judy, and Dr. Bill, your PDA National Team.
