The fight to take back Congress from ultraconservative Republican control does not start a year from now. It starts today, right now, with Steve Young, and he needs your help.
Steve Young is an exciting progressive candidate who has been officially endorsed by Progressive Democrats of America. He is running for the House seat vacated by Christopher Cox in California's 48th District. The election is taking less than one week from today, on Tuesday October 4th, 2005.
Young's values and beliefs are exactly what PDA believes Congress desperately needs. "We have to get out of Iraq yesterday," he says. "Every son or daughter of our country lost in this war is tragedy. The are not fighting for freedom, but for an administration lie." Mr. Young, if elected, would actually support our troops instead of merely paying them lip service, by pushing a real veterans benefits program like the G.I. Bill.
"We need to rethink our entire approach to emergency preparedness and utilization of national guard," says Young. "This administration's nepotism is destroying the country, and destroying the government." Having just returned from the disaster area in New Orleans, Mr. Young knows exactly what he is talking about.
"Everyone who works 40 hours a week should be above poverty level, and should have access to quality health care they can afford," says Young. "We also need to get away from fossil fuels, and invest immediately in renewable energy. Without this, we not only destroy our environment, but we also destroy the economy and fund terrorism."
"Government," says Young, "has no place in the personal decisions of women or anyone else regarding reproductive choice, the right to die, and other matters our government has been intruding in."
Mr. Young wants to bring jobs back from Asia, where they have been shipped by the multinational corporations that are destroying our middle class. He would, furthermore, push legislation that forbids the export of private financial information about Americans overseas. "In India, they have no privacy or identity theft laws regarding this information," says Young. "All the personal finance laws are out in ether with no personal protections." In the process, Young wants to bring all those customer service jobs back here, where they belong.
Let's make sure that second election does not take place. Please give whatever you can to Steve Young's campaign for Congress and tell everyone you know about this important race. Young stands an excellent chance of winning this seat; his two most formidable opponents are John Campbell, who is to the right of Bush, and Marilyn Brewer, who is trying very hard to appear moderate.
We don't need moderates, and we sure don't need Bush clones. We need Steve Young. The election is one week away. The time has come to begin the fight to take Congress, and our country, back from the horrific so-called leadership we have endured these past years.
"My dad used to say until you quit talking and start doing, nothing happens," said Young on Monday, just before heading out to participate in a protest against Arnold Schwarzenegger. He is absolutely right. Get into the game, and help PDA make this seat progressive next week.
