Update on PDA Endorsed Candidate Tony Trupiano in Michigan's 11th District

By Mike Hersh, PDA Field Coordinator

Tony
Tony Trupiano

Progressive Democrats of America is proud to endorse Tony Trupiano in his race for Michigan's 11th District House seat. Trupiano says, "The PDA endorsement is a gift. I will make PDA proud." He already has. PDA's William Rivers Pitt calls Trupiano "a force of nature - a man of tremendous accomplishment who has succeeded at virtually everything he has tried." Pitt says Tony "is a leading voice in progressive talk radio, he has written books, and teaches a seminar on the effective use of media. Now he is running for office, and he needs your help."

Mr. Trupiano seeks election to the House from Michigan's 11th District, covering Metro Detroit and environs. Incumbent Republican Thaddeus McCotter is his likely opponent. A virtual Tom DeLay clone and a blind servant of the Bush-Cheney Administration, McCotter ignores the needs of his constituents. Unlike McCotter, Trupiano actually listens to the people of the 11th District. He says, "I see the trends in this district moving much more blue. I have been talking to the constituents in the 11th, and they are ready for a change. I have a passionate progressive message the district is ready to hear."

Trupiano says, "I stand for access to health care for everyone, I will work to reorganize these free trade agreements. I will work to cut the deficit in half, and will work to repeal some of these Bush tax cuts. I want to see a universal, acceptable K-through-16 education policy that makes college accessible to every American." That's not all. Tony Trupiano is bold and decisive in ways we've needed for the longest time. If elected, Trupiano will stand with the most progressive, assertive, and best-qualified Members of Congress - and he already knows what he wants to do when he gets to Washington, D.C.

"With a Democratic Congress we will immediately begin demanding hearings against this President," Trupiano says, matching fellow Michigan leader Rep. John Conyers. This because, "Every American that dies [in Iraq] is blood on the hands of the President. What is the Pentagon's plan? What is the exit strategy?" Trupiano asks, adding "The idea that diplomacy doesn't work is a farce. We haven't done enough, and this administration's handling of the situation has been a disaster." (Above excerpted from: William Rivers Pitt: PDA Makes Another Congressional Endorsement: Tony Trupiano!)

Other congressional candidates hire people like Tony Trupiano for advice on how to get their message into the media. As a public relations expert, Tony already knows how to do that. As a member of the Democratic and Progressive Caucuses he would help counter the right wing spin machine and lead Democratic colleagues developing winning media and outreach strategies. He brings vast experience, great instincts, courage and refined communications skills to this campaign - and hopefully - to the halls of Congress.

Tony Trupiano's connection to Michigan's 11th Congressional District is long and strong. Tony was born in Detroit in March 1961 the grandson of Italian immigrants. He graduated from Lakeland High School in Milford, Michigan, in 1980 and came of age as an activist at Alma College. While attending Alma, Tony lobbied the administration to upgrade the student paper. He led a campus revolution when he and six classmates protested dangerous hazing by fraternities and sororities and founded the Sigma Chi fraternity chapter at Alma College, which elected Tony its first president.

Always a leader, Tony served as the president of Alma's Student Congress and joined with other students rewriting the constitution and bylaws of student governance. That document guides Alma students to this day. The Alma Greek system adopted new rules and regulations based on the values Tony and his fraternity brothers instilled, and their Sigma Chi chapter remains the strongest on campus. As a student member of the Alma College Board of Trustees, Tony served along with ABC's Ted Koppel and award winning musician George Shearing.

From 1985 until 1992, Tony was the owner/operator of two restaurants in Oakland County, Michigan. While serving this community, Tony was appointed Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the North Oakland Medical Center. Tony was also active with community groups serving underprivileged children. Tony married his wife Anne in 1990, and they've raised three children - Christopher, Anthony, and Dominic. Christopher received an honorable discharge from the United States Navy and serves in the Naval Reserves.

In 1993, Tony was appointed to the Oakland County Foster Care Review Board, which determined whether or not children in foster care should be returned to the homes from which they'd been removed. Later, Tony sold both restaurants to concentrate on his public relations firm, and to spend time with his growing family. Tony was the Drama Director at his High School, Lakeland High School, for two years.

Anne and Tony moved their family to Dearborn Heights, Michigan, in 1995, and Tony changed careers from public relations expert to nationally syndicated radio show host. He's been a national morning and overnight host for the past decade. Tony delivered a marathon nine-hour live radio broadcast on September 11, 2001, when his then-employer, Talk America Radio Network, turned to him to keep their national audience calm and informed. Tony has dedicated every hour of his program to the ideas and truths of the Democratic Party and his values as a passionate progressive ever since.

Tony gained renown as the voice of the middle class and labor. He's exposed unfair labor practices, walked picket lines, and sat at the negotiation table as a member of organized labor. Tony knows that unions defend the safety net which protects the middle class from poverty, and he works to strengthen this relationship.

Tony has spoken to several diverse groups and organizations. His motivational messages have moved people to become more personally engaged in social and political activism. Tony's radio guest list is a "Who's Who" of pop culture and the politics. Comfortable discussing any issue, Tony makes the most difficult issues understandable. Never afraid to ask tough questions and demand answers, Tony helps shape public debate and provides leadership and insight on issues including health care, labor rights, education, civil rights, senior issues, Social Security and many others. He is passionate about issues that affect peoples' lives.

Tony has moderated and participated in countless town hall meetings, because he believes in reaching out and involving people with his progressive ideas. Willing and able to hear and discuss all sides of an issue, Tony prides himself on independence, even while he champions Progressive Democratic positions. Tony appears on radio shows as a guest and guest host, offering well-informed and engaging commentary and opinions. Even news organizations like Fox cannot resist inviting Tony to participate on their air.

Tony has written two books, "The Best Deals in America Today" (1995) and "The Emancipation of Thomas J. Everyman: Ten Step to Discovering Your Personal Power" (2002, Author House http://www.1stBooks.com/bookview/10116). He's a recognized expert on public relations and the media, and a dedicated fighter for regular Americans.

Tony believes the Congressional race in Michigan's 11th District is not just about this district, it's about the battle for America. As Tony prepares for his battle, it is important you understand that this is your battle, too.
