PDA Announces Launch of Elected Progressives Network Project

Oct. 5, 2005--As Progressive Democrats of America tries to build an increasingly potent and broad-based grassroots network, one obvious group of progressive activist allies and partners we want to work with are already elected progressive officials and their supporters. After all, while "all politics is local" may be a cliche, it is also absolutely true. Local issues such as education, public safety, economic development, housing, recreation, and more have a daily impact on the lives of citizens. Local elected officials are real people who are familiar and accessible to voters. And local elections can still be won with relatively modest amounts of money.

That is why PDA has chosen to build a list of progressive local elected officials called the "Elected Progressives Network" (EPN). This list will consist of mayors, city councillors, members of municipal and state legislative bodies, county officers, school committees, boards, and the like. Our purpose in building this list is to further establish PDA as a key organization through which progressives holding such offices can communicate with each other, learn more about progressive policy initiatives, receive assistance with election campaigns, and generally find support to counteract the political isolation that often limits their effectiveness. As in all things, PDA's ultimate goal is an expanded political base.

PDA is asking all of our supporters, chapter members, and allies to take a moment to provide PDA with the names, titles or positions, official addresses, and e-mail addresses of elected progressive officials whom they think ought to be part of this network. Include any information about the officials you think relevant, including the reasons why you consider the official "progressive." PDA does not have a blanket political litmus test; you are the best judge of what it means to be "progressive" in your particular communities. Nonpartisan officials, Greens, Independents, and others may also be included. Please mail all responses to this EPN project to Michael Engel, the PDA EPN Coordinator at as soon as possible, ideally no later than October 15th.

PDA is enthusiastic about the potential impact of this project. Please take the time to help make it succeed. All questions or suggestions regarding EPN should be directed to .
