Maine Legislature Passes Single-payer Resolution

Speaker Pingree: Maine Supports National Single-Payer Healthcare

Published by Boston.com.

The Maine Nurses Association says registered nurses from throughout the state will be joined by physicians, patients and health care activists Monday at a legislative hearing on a single-payer health care bill sponsored by Democratic Rep. Charles Priest of Brunswick.

The state bill is similar to a federal measure, the United States National Health Care Act, that would establish a publicly financed health care program.

Last week, Maine lawmakers have passed a resolution calling on President Obama and Congress to establish a single-payer health system that covers everyone.

The Senate passed the nonbinding resolution by a 20-15 vote on Wednesday, a day after the House did the same by a 91-52 vote.  (© Copyright 2009 The New York Times Company)

Hannah Pingree, Speaker of the Maine House of Representatives released the following statement on the passage of  the resolution, Maine House Paper 1004:

“Maine has taken the lead on addressing the healthcare crisis we all face.  But the reality is that this is a national problem that needs a bold national solution.  Every American deserves access to health care.  In addition, health care costs are a major drag on our economic productivity.  We need health care reform in order to put our economy in a more competitive position as we come out of this recession.

“The resolution the Maine Legislature passed last week makes clear our support for a national, single-payer healthcare system.

“We are encouraged by the seriousness that this topic is receiving in Congress and the White House and we hope that substantial action will be taken this year to make quality, affordable health care accessible to all Americans.”
