Similarities between Obama's Afghanistan and Lyndon Johnson's Vietnam are already being drawn. Healthcare NOT Warfare co-chair Norman Solomon in his article “Forty-Four Years Later, LBJ's Ghost Hovers Over the 44th President” stated: “Pundits and Congressional leadership nodded sagely as the president cited the threat of communism and proceeded to boost US troop levels in Vietnam. Similar nodding--and nodding off--is now underway as the president cites the threat of terrorism and prepares to boost US troop levels in Afghanistan."
In this CSPAN interview, Solomon reminds us that President Obama ran on “ending the mindset that got us into war.” Obama has also called upon us to stay organized and provided us with tools to tell him how we feel. Considering the backgrounds of Obama's advisors, it becomes incumbent upon progressives to speak out--now.
In the January 30 edition of Bill Moyers Journal, Marilyn Young, a professor of history at New York University, and Pierre Sprey, a former Pentagon official and one of Defense Secretary Robert McNamara's famous "whiz kids," describe why there is no military solution in Afghanistan and how U.S. policies are exacerbating the growth of terrorism.
The BBC reports that Defense Secretary Robert Gates, in testimony to the Senate Armed Services Committee, acknowledged that the civilian casualties brought about by US air strikes are doing the United States "enormous harm."
"If Afghans come to see us as part of their problem, not part of their solution, then we are lost," he said.
The Healthcare NOT warfare campaign calls upon us to make our voices heard. To secure progressive reforms, we must ensure President Obama's success by giving strong voice to our opposition to the escalation of U.S. troop deployment in Afghanistan--let's bring our troops home and seek a political solution in Afghanistan.
Email President Obama, Vice President Biden, your Senators and member of Congress and tell them we need a political solution to secure Afghanistan--history teaches us that there is no military solution.
