PDA Leads with a Major New Foreign Policy Initiative on Diplomacy, Iran and Iraq

By Howard Jennings, PDA VA State Co-Coordinator and Out of Iraq IOT member
September 7, 2008

After our successful effort to stall the Iran Blockade bill, we are continuing our momentum with a push for a major new foreign policy led by seven former Ambassadors and Deputy Ambassadors. PDA has been working for months with our new strategic partner, The Council for the National Interest (CNI), an organization headed by former diplomats, to promote the bi-partisan Middle East diplomacy bill H. Con. Res. 321. This has evolved into the beginnings of a new policy statement that has the potential to reverse our country's foreign policy away from growing militarism and back to the statesmanlike diplomatic leadership that helped us become the leader of a new world order after World War II.

When Congress returns from recess on September 8, we are keeping up the pressure with:

In July PDA, CNI and a coalition of other groups launched call-in/email campaigns to Congress against HCR 362 and S. Res. 580. PDA members alone generated over 13,000 emails, and the pressure was so great that we are told Congress will not vote on these bills. Hill sources expect other extreme Iran bills to be introduced, however, so we must keep the pressure on. Grassroots pressure works!

The Diplomacy package being carried to Congress includes very compelling arguments and information that take this effort to a whole new strategic level. After the Congressional thrust, we will be seeking ways to take the message to the public. This is a critical part of the presidential debate, because it forcefully makes the case that America is entering a new, more complex era in which military force will not be as effective as diplomacy to counter the threat of terrorism and keep us safe. The stakes are huge. Will we continue to blunder ineptly into more wars that kill more thousands of our young troops, wear out our military, weaken our economy, compromise our democratic principles at home, and alienate the rest of world? Will our national character and our foreign policy become increasingly dominated by ineffective militarism? Or will we return to our democratic ideals at home and once again become a peaceful world leader guided by realism, vision, and statesmanship in our foreign policy?

PDA and CNI are helping lead toward the latter. YOU can help make it happen.
