Can't make it to Netroots Nation in Austin this week? You can still participate in the best of Netroots Nation in Second Life.
At
Netroots Nation, the Daily Kos faithful gather national and international experts, including a virtual session held in conjunction with the 2008 BlogHer Conference. They participate in identity, issue, and regional caucuses; hear prominent political, issue and policy-oriented speakers; and watch a progressive film series. Netroots Nation is the most concentrated gathering of progressive bloggers to date. Even if you aren't hopping on a plane to Austin to attend in person, you can still participate.
As progressives convene in Austin, Texas, this week, a concurrent event will also take place in the virtual world of
Second Life. In addition to live streaming sessions from Austin, there will be interactive events between the two gatherings, Second Life-only events designed to educate and activate future progressive leaders, as well as joint events with attendees of the virtual version of the
BlogHer convention this weekend in San Francisco.
Second Life? Think of this as teleconferencing with progressive activists from around the world in a virtual world of their own creation. In Second Life, residents adopt avatars and interact directly with one another through chat.
An active progressive community in Second Life includes bloggers, local leaders, and many tech-savvy political activists. PDA established a Second Life chapter in the autumn of 2007.
The Netroots Nation conference begins Thursday evening with the keynote address by DNC Chair Howard Dean at 5:30-7:00 p.m. Second Life Time (SLT = Pacific Time). Three full days of progressive politics follow, with speeches, panels, tours, and dances through the weekend. Be sure to visit the PDA booth on Netroots Nation Island to get a free Healthcare NOT Warfare shirt for your avatar.
