Georgia Primary Today--Vote For Regina Thomas

Thomas receives the support of progressive Democrats

State Senator Regina Thomas has received a boost from a small but determined band of PDA phone bankers and human billboarders today as she attempts to unseat incumbent U.S. Congressman John Barrow in Georgia's Democratic Primary Election.

PDA members in Georgia mobilized over the weekend to help Thomas after Presidential hopeful Barack Obama endorsed Barrow and recorded a radio ad for him. Barrows is a Blue Dog Democrat who voted to give Bush $163 billion more to occupy Iraq and then he voted to give the President unlimited power to wiretap American citizens. The 12th Congressional District, which runs from Augusta south along the Atlantic coast to Savannah, is 45 percent African-American but has a right wing representative who acts like a Southern Republican.

In partnership with Bob Fertik and Democrats.com, twenty members of Progressive Democrats of America from across the country have called hundreds of voters in Georgia's 12th Congressional District to urge them to vote for Thomas. Additionally Will Smith and Cynthia Brown, two PDA members who live in Thomas' hometown of Savannah, joined other Thomas campaigners to human billboard for her at major intersections yesterday and today.

These efforts have been supported by radio advertising and a phone message recorded by Thomas sent to a base of likely Primary voters. PDA members who live in the district have been provided a flyer and have been asked to canvass their neighborhoods as well. Will Strong (pictured) was out at the corner of DeRenne & Waters Ave. in Savannah, Georgia, yesterday afternoon encouraging motorists to vote for State Sen. Regina Thomas in today's Georgia Democratic Primary.

Thomas distinguished herself in the Georgia legislature as an outspoken and effective legislator, supports access to affordable, universal health care, better benefits for veterans, quality education for all and better services for the disadvantaged.

Thomas is married to Ervin J. Thomas, a retired police officer. They couple have four childre and, nine grandchildren.

Win or lose, PDA is using this moment to build on-going chapters in Georgia and to further the progressive agenda. Special thanks to Tom Pallow, national volunteer coordinator and Brad Kennedy, PDA's summer intern, for going the extra mile this weekend.
