It's spring at last and the hope that comes with new life is renewing itself after a long, hard, cold winter. I feel that hope on our conference calls and in conversations with our Advisory Board members. I see the hope in the great ideas we've been implementing, in the new faces among the PDA community, and in the familiar faces, too. Hope is the power that fuels our activism, and with the upcoming general election, we have a lot of activity ahead of us.
In February, PDA member, syndicated columnist, author, and outspoken critic of the war and occupation in Iraq Norman Solomon joined the board. Jim Hightower national radio commentator, columnist and author, followed in March. We are honored and pleased to welcome them both, and look forward to their participation.
On March 5, we launched the “Healthcare NOT Warfare” (HNW) campaign to redirect wasteful and unnecessary military spending to meet human needs. HNW launch events took place in Santa Rosa and Sacramento California and in Washington D.C.. A fourth event in New York City benefited our endorsed PDA candidates who are distributing HNW flyers and displaying the HNW petition button on their sites. Please sign the petition if you haven't already. The campaign is co-chaired by Rep. John Conyers, Marilyn Clement of Heallthcare Now! Norman Solomon and Donna Smith of American Patients for Universal Health Care .
We have been developing campaign teams for each of our endorsed congressional candidates and expect to send a number of them off to Congress in November. The excitement of this historic presidential race cannot be ignored, so today we've launch campaign teams for both Clinton and Obama.
Please join us for Tuesday's Clean, Fair and Transparent Elections Issue Organizing Team call. Filmmaker David Earnhardt of "UNCOUNTED: The New Math of American Elections" along with executive producer Mac Pirkle and co-producer Glenna Johnson will be with us. And don't forget Thursday's Inside the Party call where we share progressive strategies in Party organizing.
I'm happy to announce we have added new chapters in Oregon, New York, and New Mexico and extend a warm welcome to them. Our national team is always available to help them off to a successful start and to offer assistance to all of our chapters.
It is sustaining donations by our “Change makes Change” partners that make this possible, yet they represent less than 1% percent of our members. The “Change makes Change” program exists to encourage 10% of our members to support us financially for as little as the price of a cup of latte a month-just $5 or more. If we can reach that goal, we can accomplish so much more to help our candidates win, to transform the Democratic Party and to hire more staff to help PDA grow.
Please become a “Change makes Change” partner today and guarantee the survival and growth of PDA.
