On the Fifth Anniversary of the Iraq War, Peace or More War?

February 22, 2008

Congress will take up Bush's supplemental Iraq war funding request in the upcoming weeks, which coincides with the fifth anniversary of the war (March 19). Most Americans never thought we would still be in Iraq at this time. Five years down the road, few of us thought that Bush and his cronies, with the aid of a Democratic Congress, would have ruined our economy, shredded our Bill of Rights, spoiled our moral standing in the world, destroyed the lives of millions of innocent Iraqis, killed 4000 and injured more than 30,000 U.S troops. Few of us would have believed Congress, at this date, would be authorizing more blood and treasure on this failed exercise in Iraq.

The Peace movement was dealt a blow by the Democratic Congress we elected to end this carnage in 2006. Democratic leaders have chosen to play a political chess game, betting they can win the presidential race against this backdrop of human suffering forced upon us by a Republican administration. They might be right, but it does not excuse their behavior.

The peace movement cannot allow politics to trump morality, even though it's been a long and disappointing fight. We must stay united and continue to mobilize against the war in this Congress, at the ballot box, and in the next Congress if necessary. We've fought this fight with Congress many times before with disappointing results, but, for the sake of this generation and the next, we must continue to raise our voices and take to the streets and the halls of Congress to stop the death and destruction in Iraq.

Over the next weeks we'll be targeting different members of Congress, beginning with Speaker Pelosi and Steny Hoyer, House Democratic Majority Leader, who recently found their backbones over the FISA fight. Please contact them at the Capitol switchboard or send them a letter (contact info below), and tell them how pleased you are they stood up for the Constitution, and in so doing, for our rights and liberty. Just as they have refused to bring FISA forward for a vote, they should do the same thing with the supplemental funding request for Iraq. Ask your friends and family to do the same thing. If they hear positive feedback from us, maybe they'll exercise those newfound backbones and take a firm stand against more funding for war. Please, do it today.
