Because Congress failed to take up the FY2008 Defense Authorization Bill and decided to authorize funds through the end of the year, the Fall Peace Offensive has been extended.
PDA is continuing to gather signatures on the Pledge for Peace petition. The total number of signatures stands at nearly 40,000 thanks to the efforts of our progressive allies in this campaign who have circulated the petition. Congress' failure to take a definitive stand over the appropriations bill has allowed more time to reach the 100,000 signature goal. Please sign the petition and ask five friends to sign it, too.
Polls indicate a clear majority of Americans are tiring of the Iraq Occupation and want to bring our troops home. While Congress has been slow to act, efforts by peace activists to push their representatives to respond to the will of the people are beginning to pay off.
The effort has been successful in convincing an additional 19 members of Congress to sign the open letter, which was updated and delivered to the President in October. The total number of signers is now at 89 due in large part to congressional office visits by constituents often led by PDA members.
Further developments include PDA's participation as a coalition member in United for Peace and Justice's Oct. 27 National Mobilization Against the Iraq Occupation. Eleven cities across the country are hosting regional demonstrations: Boston, Chicago, Jonesborough, Los Angeles, New Orleans, New York, Orlando, Philadelphia, Salt Lake City, San Francisco, and Seattle. As the opposition to the Iraq Occupation grows stronger, the possibility has grown that the U.S. may attack Iran. Unfortunately, the Senate voted to identify Iran's Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organization, the first time the US has identified a country's military as terrorists. (In a turnabout, the Iranian parliament voted to characterize the C.I.A. and U.S. Army as terrorist organizations, too.) It is believed the Senate action will allow the president to attack Iran under expanded war powers without additional authorization from Congress. While working to end the Iraq occupation, peace activists are now organizing to stop an attack on Iran before another military front opens in the Middle East.
