PDA Priorities for Congressional Recess meetings

May 15, 2007

US Representative will be in their districts shortly – as Congress will recess from end of business, May 25, until Monday, June 4. Now is the time to:

1. SCHEDULE DISTRICT VISITS with your member of Congress in his or her district office over the Memorial Day recess. Organize a PDA delegation, consider bringing alliance partners on specific issues. SEE TALKING POINTS BELOW.

2. ATTEND YOUR CONGRESS MEMBER’S TOWN HALL MEETINGS/FORUMS
Some Reps convene or participate in town hall meetings in their districts over the recess. If yours does, please distribute PDA Issue Flyers – and prepare questions or statements to challenge reluctant members to support the PDA agenda items below.

3. USE LOCAL MEDIA
Write an Op-Ed or Letter to the Editor in your local paper or issue a press release to engage local journalists or secure an interview on local radio. Highlight your visit to your representative, as a call from constituents for the member to take the lead in Congress by supporting legislative efforts to end the Iraq occupation and redirect funding to a real national healthcare program. Or to thank your member, if he or she has already signed on to or supported the PDA legislative agenda.

HERE ARE PDA MEMORIAL DAY 2007 LEGISLATIVE PRIORITIES:

A. IRAQ/IRAN/IMPEACHMENT

1. McGovern Amendment: Thank representatives who voted on May 10 for HR 2237, the McGovern Amendment to bring our troops home. See list. Challenge those who did not.

2. Clear statement on Iraq:

3. Impeachment: Urge your representative to co-sponsor H.Res. 333, the Kucinich bill to impeach Cheney. Demand continued accountability and aggressive investigations of the White House over illegal, improper conduct

4. Preclude War with Iran: Support HR 770 prohibiting the use of funds for covert or military action against Iran to effect "regime change," in accordance with international law and constitutional and statutory requirements for Congressional authorization.

B. “ENHANCED MEDICARE FOR ALL”/SINGLE PAYER

1. Urge Co-Sponsorship: Ask your Rep. to sign on as co-sponsor of the Conyers Bill, HR 676, "United States National Health Insurance Act ("Expanded & Improved Medicare for All Bill"). Thank new co-sponsors Betty Sutton (OH-13) & Tim Ryan (OH-17) as well as Linda Sanchez (CA-37), Phil Hare (IL-17), Corrine Brown (FL-03) and Eleanor Holmes-Norton (DC). Remind members of Congress that many unions are endorsing Enhanced Medicare for All.

2. Demand hearings on HR 676: After a successful teach-in for members of Congress, keep the momentum going by urging HR 676 sponsors to push for and to participate in full hearings on this proposal.

C. ECONOMIC JUSTICE

1. Right to form a union: Thank representatives who voted for the Employee Free Choice Act, guaranteeing union recognition in workplaces where that is the wish of a majority of workers.

2. Trade:

D. CLEAN, FAIR & TRANSPARENT ELECTIONS

1. Holt Bill HR 811: A vote is scheduled for May 21. Thank those representatives who supported PDA and Puerto Rican Legal Defense Fund's demand of paper ballots as the official tally of each vote cast.

2. Clean Money/Clean Elections Bill. Urge your member of Congress to co-sponsor the Tierney/Grijalva Clean Money Bill, HR 1614, establishing voluntary public financing of the public’s elections.
