Historic Bill says "Bring Troops Home"

January 17, 2007, Washington, DC

At a news conference just concluded on Capitol Hill, landmark legislation was introduced by PDA Advisory Board members -- Reps. Lynn Woolsey, Barbara Lee and Maxine Waters: The Bring the Troops Home and Iraq Sovereignty Restoration Act.

Answering President Bush’s challenge to present an alternative proposal for Iraq, Woolsey, Lee and Waters – joined by thirteen other courageous members of Congress (including McGovern, Kucinich, Watson and Grijalva) -- have fashioned a comprehensive plan: fully fund a 6-month withdrawal of US forces and military contractors (from the date of enactment of the bill); repeal authorization for the use of force; prohibit permanent military bases in Iraq; provide economic and political aid to the Iraqi people and their government; and fully fund the VA Health Care system for all military veterans.  The bill number is H.R. 508.

PDA leaders are on the ground in Washington on this historic day, coordinating grassroots support for the initiative. Said executive director Tim Carpenter from Capitol Hill: “PDA allies in Congress are filling a vacuum in Washington, providing the leadership to carry out the mandate for peace that voters issued in November. These lawmakers are doing their job on the inside; now it’s our job to mobilize the grassroots.”

It’s up to PDA activists to spread the word – to friends, relatives, co-workers, other activists…and to media of every type, including independent blogs and websites. H. R 508 is a concrete plan – not just a symbolic, non-binding resolution – that progressives and Democrats can rally around.
