Edwards Calls for Leaving Iraq
January 16, 2007, New York, NY
On Sunday, presidential candidate John Edwards urged Congressional Democrats to resist the Bush escalation in Iraq and called for the beginnings of a withdrawal: “The best way to make clear that we are leaving is to actually start leaving.” He wants
40-50,000 troops immediately withdrawn.
Speaking at the historic Riverside Church in New York – where Martin Luther King Jr. made his momentous speech against the Vietnam War 40 years ago – Edwards offered remarks that many took to be aimed at New York Senator Hillary Clinton: “If you are in Congress, and you know this war is going in the wrong direction, it is no longer enough to study your options and keep your own counsel.” A spokesman for Sen. Clinton immediately complained about Edwards’ “political attacks.”
Edwards was introduced by Martin Luther King III, who said his father would have admired Edwards’ commitment to fight poverty. The former senator’s call for an immediate pullback of troops was “greeted by thunderous applause” from 2,000 church-goers, according to the New York Times. Like Sen. Clinton, Edwards voted to give Bush authorization for the Iraq war in October 2002; he has called that vote a mistake and has apologized for it.
