House finally Votes NO on Iraq Spending, Next Stop--the Senate!

May 17, 2008

Take Action Now!

On Thursday, May 15,  the good news that the House had voted against more funding for the war boomeranged across the Internet. Activists who have been working towards this moment for years are overjoyed. Pat yourself on the back and get ready for the next fight…

The bill now moves to the Senate, where it will likely be drastically altered. The war funding will probably be added back in, and the domestic spending in amendment three may be scratched. After the Senate acts on the package, both chambers will try to negotiate a compromise, which will then go back to both chambers for approval.

Here's the “inside” strategy:

1) If your member of the House voted NO on the funding, call your rep (202-224-3121), say thanks and ask him or her to hold firm over the next few weeks. Click here for the roll call vote.

2) If your member voted yes or present, call your rep (202-224-3121) and tell him or her to vote against any funding bill that might come before the House in the new few weeks.

3) We must escalate our pressure on the Senate! Call your two senators (202-224-3121) and let them know how strongly you oppose further funding for this war! (Find your representative and senators here.)

Here's the “outside” strategy:

1) Join PDA's Healthcare NOT Warfare campaign--support our endorsed candidates who support the campaign. Join in our neighborhood canvass days on May 17 and May 24--order your neighborhood canvass kit here.

We have won this fight, but the battle still looms-we must push as hard as we can to stop the Senate from wrongly appropriating billions more of our tax dollars and spilling more blood on this misbegotten occupation in Iraq.
