On January 3rd, Tim Carpenter joined Rev. Jesse Jackson, Green Party Presidential Candidate David Cobb, Dr. Melissa Lacewell, the Ohio legal team, including Cliff Arnebeck, Bob Fitrakis and Susan Truitt, and others to sound a united call for democracy in the United States. While attention has been paid to democracy in other countries, we have ignored it at our peril here at home. Dr. Lacewell, professor of statistics and political science at the University of Chicago, described how the suppression of minority voters is "like the canary in the coalmine," at first those least protected from the dangers fall victim to the fumes, "then the noxious fumes come for you."
Carpenter's remarks focused on the positive actions that can be taken in the next 48 hours. He asked people in the audience to follow the Progressive Democrats of America Action Alert on this web site (see above), which sends e-mails to targeted Senators asking them to stand with members of the House of Representatives as they contest the seating of the Electoral College Members on January 6th. He also asked that people call the US Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-3121 both before and on January 6th to ask their Senators to do the right thing.
The Columbus rally was attended by over 1000 people despite rainy weather that echoed the conditions on Nov. 2nd. Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones (D-OH) brought busses full of voters from Cleveland who were making a stop on the way to the Rally being held on January 6th in Washington, D.C.
