"We Are Being Shafted"

By Rick Meis
February 8, 2010, Bozeman, MT

The following letter was sent to the Bozeman Daily Chronicle, Billings Gazette, Montana Standard, Helena IR, Great Falls Tribune:

Dear Editor and the People of Montana,

From the President's State of the Union address:

"But if anyone from either party has a better approach that will bring down premiums, bring down the deficit, cover the uninsured, strengthen Medicare for seniors, and stop insurance company abuses, let me know. ... I'm eager to see it."

He was referring to the House and Senate bills that were passed.

It should be a rhetorical statement. The problem is that it reflects the sad state of our elected officials in Washington. It is a patronizing, ignorant statement.

There not only is a better approach, but REAL health care reform bills were introduced in Congress that leadership would not let move. 16,000 physicians, thousands of other healthcare workers, most unions and millions of people all have been asking for these bills to move forward.

What happened? $20,000,000 from Insurance, Pharma and Big Med went into the President's coffers. The President jumped on the corporate bandwagon, just like the Senator from Health Insurance, Max Baucus, leader of the fight to subsidize the insurance industry in DC. The same Max who received a higher percentage of money from Insurance, Pharma and Big Med than any other elected official.

Mr. President: why were two physicians turned away from the White House the very next day when they tried to deliver a letter to the President to "let you know" a better approach? Why were the same two physicians arrested at the next Presidential appearance when they showed up to "let you know?"

We are being shafted. It is time to quit being quiet. Tell our elected officials that we want REAL health care reform, not some minor insurance reform that we can't afford. A Single-Payer Health system (or other universal health care) WILL cover everyone, bring down costs and stop insurance abuse.
