Arizona PDA Joins TROOPS HOME FAST on July 4th

July 7, 2006

Herb Paine at Code Pink event
Herb Paine, PDA-endorsed candidate in Arizona's 3rd District, spoke out against the war at a worldwide hunger strike organized by Code Pink.

PDA joined allies Code Pink and the Peace Alliance at Steele Indian School Park in Phoenix, AZ this past Independence Day to stand in solidarity with local supporters and national activists for the TROOPS HOME FAST hunger strike.  Each of the 68 Arizonans who have died in Iraq was honored by a local faster who held up a picture and read a short history of the fallen soldier.

National Code Pink inspired and organized the worldwide hunger strike, which included PDA Board Members Medea Benjamin, Cindy Sheehan, Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey, Rev. Lennox Yearwood, and Jodie Evans.  Also participating were PDA advocates and supporters Sean Penn, Ed Asner, Graham Nash, and Jonathan Tasini, along with notable personalities Dick Gregory, Susan Sarandon, Willie Nelson, Alice Walker, Danny Glover and others. Most activists fasted for a 24-hour period over July 4th, but the Code Pink TROOPS HOME FAST will continue at the White House in Washington, D.C.

Dan O’Neal, Arizona PDA State Co-Coordinator, led off the Arizona roll-call by remarking, “Today is truly a historic event…3400 people across the country all fasting at the same time.  I don’t recall in the history of America this many people fasting all at once in the name of peace—in fact, the real noble cause.”

PDA nationally-endorsed candidate Herb Paine (AZ Congressional District 3) honored one of the fallen and added, “For the last three years, beyond the end of the war, President Bush has chosen to continue the occupation of Iraq.  We can ill-afford a war that is ill-conceived; a blunder that continues every day to take money from our schools, our infrastructure and our environment.”

Herb Paine’s campaign reaches far outside the boundaries of Arizona CD3 and deserves the attention and financial support of PDA members nationwide.   His strong anti-war message and his commitment to “re-invest in America” adds to the efforts of other PDA-endorsed candidates. Together they'll champion the progressive message on the national stage.  To help put another progressive in Congress, donate to Herb’s campaign at http://www.paineforcongress.com.
