PDA Endorses Shawn O'Donnell in Virginia's 1st Congressional District

Shawn O'Donnell
Candidate Shawn O'Donnell

On April 8, the Virginia PDA endorsed entrepreneur, community leader and founding member of PDA-Virginia, Shawn O'Donnell for Congress in Virginia's 1st CD. The district stretches from just south of Washington along Virginia's Chesapeake coast as far south as Hampton Roads, encompassing most of Virginia's eastern shore. O'Donnell, presuming he wins an upcoming caucus vote in which so far he is ahead of his rival, will face Republican JoAnn Davis in November in a contest that could produce an upset that the pundits do not see coming.

O'Donnell has been an entrepreneur for over three decades. He expanded his ever growing business and management background and experience to include retail, manufacturing, information technology, start-ups, business development, and consulting. He's been a sales and marketing director, founder and president of an educational services company, president and chief operating officer of various manufacturing companies and the chief financial officer of a computer software company. He has also been an active and long-term member of civic and business organizations in his community.

A lifelong Democrat, O'Donnell decided to run for Congress after trying hard to campaign for Kerry in 2004, only to find very little support from the Democratic Party organizations in his district. Author of the book The Democratic Party From The Grassroots: The Ultimate Guidebook for Democrats, based on that 2004 experience, O'Donnell is living what he preached in his book, assembling an impressive group of volunteers supported by a paid staff, and having already raised more money than Democrats typically raise by November in his district.

He stands for single payer health insurance to address the health care crisis in America, the replacement of free trade with fair trade policies, ending and reversing the Republican assault on our environment, working toward affordable energy and housing, reforming tax policies to make the tax code more progressive again, and mandating that all voting include creation of a paper trail by which all election results can be verified if necessary. On the Iraq War, he favors the Murtha resolution, that calls for pulling out U.S. troops as fast as possible, starting now.

PDA Virginia looks forward to giving his exciting campaign every helping hand it can, and putting a PDA member in the House of Representatives. For more information, see his campaign website, and a long, 3-part interview with him on a progressive Virginia blog.
