The Rumble in River City

"One woman of courage is a majority." That was part of the speech in support of Marcy Winograd that I was honored to deliver at the California Democratic Party Convention in Sacramento. In paraphrasing Max Cleland's remarks, which preceded the final statewide endorsement vote, I could have also included the sentence, "and WE, the Progressive Movement, are the majority of this Party as well." Candidate Mobilizes for Marcy Winograd During California Democratic State Party Convention

It takes courage to be a true progressive., I hadn't expected to be facing a test of the courage of my convictions at the California Democratic Convention. It's one thing to say you are a progressive and you will work for progressive values when elected, but another to actually have the spine to stand up to opposition when it comes from your own party. So there I was on the sidewalk outside the Sacramento Convention Center, weighing my choices: to support a candidate with the courage to speak out clearly against the occupation of Iraq and run against a pro-war Democratic incumbent or tow the Party line, put away my petition sheet and go schmooze with the Party bigwigs at the convention dinner. PDA's Winograd BLOCKS Dem Party Endorsement of Six-Term Congresswoman Harman

April 3, 2006--In what must be a shock to the California Democratic Party, Progressive Democrat of Los Angeles President Marcy Winograd BLOCKED six-term incumbent Congresswoman Jane Harman from receiving the California Democratic Party's endorsement at this weekend's delegate caucus in Harbor City. Winograd won 35% of the 104-delegate vote, enough to prevent Harman from picking up an early 36th congressional district endorsement prior to the California Democratic Party Convention in Sacramento later this month. At that time another vote will be taken with a delegate pool purged of many grassroots activists. [more]

PDA's own Marcy Winograd Kicks off Congressional Campaign

Amid "Win with Winograd" and "Save our Democracy" signs, Progressive Democrats of Los Angeles President Marcy Winograd launched her grassroots California congressional campaign on the lawn of Eleanor Belser's home, an organizer of Mar Vista Neighbors for Peace and Justice. Winograd and friends – Gore Vidal, PDA Chair Mimi Kennedy and Board Members Tom Hayden and Lila Garrett and a crowd of 125 supporters – vowed to unseat pro-war Democrat Jane Harman in the 36th congressional district primary on June 6th. PDA's Own Marcy Winograd Launches Campaign against Rep. Harman in CA

Over a hundred progressives turned out in Venice, California, Saturday night to launch Marcy Winograd's campaign challenge to pro-war Congresswoman Jane Harman, who represents California's 36th Congressional District. Marcy is the President of Progressive Democrats of Los Angeles (PDLA). Marcy's supporters pledged to claim the Democratic Party as the party of the grassroots peace and social justice movement. Amid resounding applause and calls of "Dump Harman!" Marcy told her supporters that the campaign will be about mobilizing the progressive movement throughout Southern California. "Either way, whether I win now or in 2008," said Winograd, "progressives will come out ahead because Harman will know that elected Democrats must listen to the people, lest the people rise up. Challenging pro-war Democrats are the true Party patriots, demanding the Party adopt a winning platform that will represent the overwhelming majority of Democrats who favor an end to the US occupation of Iraq."
