Single Payer Candidates

Brown, Sherrod (OH)

Running for Senate

Senator Gravel: A Progressive Candidate with a Proud Progressive History

As a teen, Mike Gravel worked in his family's painting and construction business. He later enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in various intelligence capacities in Europe. After his military service, he earned a BA in Economics from Columbia. After moving to Alaska and embarking upon a successful career in real estate, he was elected to Congress and later the U.S. Senate. As a two-term U.S. Senator from Alaska, based in part on his knowledge of the military from the inside, he opposed the Vietnam War, facilitated the release of the Pentagon Papers, and waged a successful filibuster against the draft. While in the Senate, he also opposed nuclear power and supported a wide range of environmental legislation, which, despite his support for the Alaska pipeline, catalyzed sufficient industrial and corporate opposition to result in his electoral defeat. Why I Support Hillary Clinton

As you know, I have long opposed the war in Iraq and have consistently fought hard to end it. I also strongly support Hillary Clinton's campaign for the Presidency.

Yes, I believe she voted the wrong way the first time - but so did every other candidate who was in office when the vote happened (the exception being my good friend, Dennis Kucinich). But, to be totally honest--after five long years of war--I'm less interested in the past and more interested in what's next.

Hillary has made it clear: If George Bush hasn't ended his war by January 2008, then as President she will. I believe her. If I didn't, there is no way in hell that I would endorse her. She has the much-needed skill, ability, strength and standing to bring this sad chapter in our history to an end. It won't be easy, but she will do it. [more]

Election is Today for Jamie

Election Day is TODAY, in the special Congressional election in Massachusetts CD 5!

State Representative Jamie Eldridge is not only with PDA on issues from Iraq to fair trade to H.R. 676 “Enhanced Medicare for All,” but he’s running a campaign for Congress that we can all be proud of–taking his principled message door-to-door across the district.

He’s challenging the Democratic Party to embrace a full progressive agenda. And he’s backed by grassroots supporters from every progressive social movement in the area. [more]

Kucinich makes his case at KOS

This is the fourth in a series of articles on the Edwards and Kucinich campaigns.

When I finally arrived in Chicago for the YearlyKOS convention, I was surprised and pleased that Dennis Kucinich would be a part of the Presidential Forum. I heard he had not been invited, but, as we know, Kucinich is a scrapper and would not be denied.

The candidates took the stage at 1:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon in front of a packed house. The format of this forum was better than any other I’ve seen so far. Each candidate shared equally in the number of questions, and each was allowed rebuttals. Kudos to YearlyKOS volunteers for taking an even-handed approach, one that gave Kucinich the platform he has been denied.

He was seated on the podium with Senators Clinton, Obama, Edwards, Gravel, and Governor Richardson, and he quickly managed to distinguish himself from the others on domestic and foreign policy. [more]

Sherrod Brown Turns Ohio Senate Seat Blue!

PDA endorsed candidate for U.S. Senate from Ohio, Sherrod Brown, defeated Republican Mike DeWine on Tuesday, turning that red seat to blue. “Today in Ohio, in the middle of America, the middle class won,” said Senator-elect Sherrod Brown, in his victory speech in Cleveland on Tuesday.

Brown fought hard for the working men and women of Ohio as a U.S. Congressman for 14 years, and now, in the Senate with a newly Democratic majority, will be an even more effective leader for progressive change.

A lot of people told Brown he couldn’t win as a progressive. Strongly advised to be middle-of-the-road, to not be himself, and to be cautious, Brown chose instead to wear his progressive label proudly. “It’s a risk worth taking to stand up for what you believe,” he said repeatedly. [more]

Torture Bill Vote - Rep. Brown Turns Back on Backbone Award!

Were you as surprised as we were by Congressman Sherrod Brown’s affirmative vote for H.R.6166 - Military Commissions Act of 2006? Although Brown’s vote would not have changed the outcome of the so-called “compromise” legislation, we wish he had voted differently.  Brown's colleagues -- Ohio Democrats, running in safe Democratic strongholds, Marcy Kaptur (CD-9), Dennis Kucinich (CD-10), Stephanie Tubbs Jones (CD-11) and Tim Ryan (CD-17) -- voted against the measure.

Unfortunately, Congressman Brown lost his backbone and has allowed himself to fall victim to the GOP agenda of forcing a floor vote designed to cost Democratic senatorial candidates their races against powerful incumbents. As a result, Sherrod Brown is the first recipient of the Backbone Award to receive a Spineless Citation from the Backbone Campaign in the same month. [more]

Rep. Sherrod Brown Proudly Earns Backbone Award

On Sept. 17 Rep. Sherrod Brown(D-OH), a host of local and statewide candidates, and numerous labor leaders gathered in Tallmadge, Ohio’s historic circle district for a Democratic Unity Rally. Hundreds came out on a beautiful Sunday afternoon to take part in the rally sponsored by the Tallmadge Democratic Club and the local Progressive Democrats of America chapters, the Ohio Progressive Action Coalition and the Portage Democratic Coalition.  [more]

PDA Endorses Ohio’s Longstanding Progressive, Sherrod Brown, for U.S. Senate

In his new book “Hostile Takeover,” David Sirota calls Ohio's seven-term Democratic Rep. Sherrod Brown, a "hero" for fighting big business to protect the interests of ordinary Americans. Drum Major Institute for Public Policy -- a non-partisan, non-profit organization -- gives Brown an "A" 100% Progressive Rating, Progressive Punch gives him an 89.83%, and Irregular Times rates him "Extraordinarily Progressive."
