Winograd Urges Democratic Leadership to Come Back Strong as the Voice of Working America

January 21, 2010, Marina del Rey, CA

PDA-endorsed Congressional Candidate says loss of Senate seat proves Party must reverse course, with progressive congressional challengers offering the greatest promise for re-energizing the base

Following Republican Scott Brown’s senate victory in Massachusetts, Democratic Party Congressional Candidate (CA-36) Marcy Winograd urges Democrats in Congress to reaffirm their commitment to the Party's core values and fight for working America, not surrender the populist mantle to far-right Republicans intent on privatizing government.

Says Winograd, “Washington faces the danger of drawing the wrong conclusions from yesterday's loss of what had been America's true-blue Senate seat. This upset reflects less the zeal of a million conservative voters than the fact that two million Massachusetts Democrats stayed home, rejecting the politics of Democratic Party appeasement."

"The fact is, if we stand for the people, the people will stand with us. Our rank and file instead sees a Democratic Party leadership retreating from a progressive agenda for a public option, labor rights, environmental protection, and immigration reform and bowing to the most reactionary forces in American politics; weakening the public sector and expanding the war machine.Yesterday's loss proves our Party must reverse its course and redefine itself as the voice of working people, of immigrants, of women, of the populist. This is why campaigns for progressive congressional challengers offer the greatest promise for re-energizing the base and mobilizing Democrats to vote in mid-term elections.”

“Unfortunately, the Republicans were able to craft Brown's campaign as an insurgent struggle for the working people against ever-intrusive big government. All they had to do was point their finger at overnight bank bail-outs & mandated private health insurance, then scream about corporate welfare and attacks on individual freedoms. We need the Democratic leadership to keep the keys to our treasury, rather than allow the banking, health insurance, and big pharmaceutical interests to raid it under the banner of the Democratic Party."

Winograd calls on the Democratic leadership to use the reconciliation process to pursue a public option in the health insurance reform bill–or to craft a new simpler bill that expands Medicare incrementally or makes insurances companies subject to anti-trust laws.

To hold onto a Democratic majority in the Senate and win more congressional seats, Winograd urges the Obama White House and Congress to put America back to work. “On the economic front, now is not the time for retreat but for a strong offensive against unemployment. We need a Green New Deal, something along the lines of the WPA during the Great Depression, to fix our infrastructure, develop renewable energy, and construct mass transit. For the Democrats to bounce back, they need to put America back to work. That's why I have made a Green New Deal central to my platform for progressive change.”
