Simpson: Visionary Leadership for Florida's 10th CD

July 21, 2008

In a July 16 press release on the news that President Bush had lifted the ban on off-shore drilling, Samm Simpson stated, "I was appalled, but not surprised at the announcement of President Bush that he lifted the executive's restriction on offshore exploration, and blamed Congress for 'standing in the way' of opening up the spigot." Simpson continued, "Using the pain of the consumer to push an agenda of environmental destruction and oil company profit is not an enlightened energy policy. It's business as usual. And it's business as usual that has put us into this mess. We need visionary leadership to guide the American people into a [green] energy revolution."

Simpson is clearly a visionary, whether it is energy policy, health care, or trade. Her all-volunteer army is working overtime to take her message directly to the voters of Florida's Congressional District 10 in the lead-up to the August 26 primary election.

A large turnout of voters is expected to participate in the primary--a record number of vote-by-mail ballots have already been mailed in the district, with more requests coming in every day. The campaign predicts 15,000 to 20,000 ballots will be mailed and is ramping up efforts to ensure those voters are contacted via mail or phone. Preliminary surveys show Simpson winning the vote-by-mail race by a substantial margin. There are thousands more voters and new registrants to contact. The campaign is canvassing and phone-banking the thousands of new registrants and existing voters to ensure that District 10 voters know Simpson's story.

The campaign is experiencing increased interest in the Democratic primary race. For the first time in years, the St. Petersburg Times has assigned a reporter to cover the Democratic primary, and Simpson is attracting the attention of the mainstream media-good news for the people-powered campaign.

Simpson has disproved the rumors started by her detractors in 2006 that she will never find the financial support required to run an effective race. Quite the contrary, her all-volunteer army continues to expand, as do the number of small donor contributions. While her Democratic opponents are self-funding their campaigns-about $25,000 in  Hackworth's case, and over $200,000 in Linn's-Simpson has financed her campaign entirely through small donor contributions, keeping even or even out-pacing her opponents on this front.

Check out Samm Simpson's website at www.sammsimpson.com, where she regularly blogs. Help Samm get the word out-send her website link to your friends and neighbors.

Please donate-all contributions are gratefully accepted no matter how small--and enlist in her all-volunteer army, too. With the election of Samm Simpson, the citizens of Florida's District 10 will finally have the progressive representation they deserve!
