Armitage Wins Endorsement of Greater Daytona PDA Chapter

By Joel Fears
March 1, 2008, Daytona Beach, FL

On February 6, 2008, Progressive Democrats of Greater Daytona held a meeting to consider the endorsement of Faye Armitage or Clyde Malloy in Florida's 7th Congressional District. The Seventh C.D. covers parts of central Florida and east central Florida and includes all of St. Johns and Flagler Counties, a small portion of eastern Putnam County, the center area and Northeastern coast of Volusia County and much of suburban Western Seminole County. Some cities included in the seventh district are Daytona Beach, Ormond Beach, St. Augustine, Deland, Deltona, and the Orlando metropolitan area. Right-wing Bush Republican John Mica has held the seat for 15 years.

Both candidates had very similar progressive platforms, and it appeared at first that the chapter might be unable to determine which to endorse. "But their responses differed on the question of whether Congress should continue funding a missile shield, which was posed in the Greater Daytona Progressive Democrats questionnaire; Malloy favored continued funding while Armitage opposed it."

Armitage is a staunch supporter of single-payer healthcare. Like 47 million other Americans, she has no health insurance and has seen first hand how devastating it is for American families to lack access to affordable medical care. Also, Armitage has actively opposed the war in Iraq. She spoke out against the occupation of Iraq on September 15, 2007, in Washington, D.C

In the end, Faye Armitage won 66% of the vote and received the Greater Daytona Progressive Democrats endorsement. The chapter plans to get actively involved in her campaign by raising money, canvassing, distributing literature and making phone calls.
