'Winners Never Quit and Quitters Never Win'

August 7, 2007

In 2005, Steve Young became PDA’s first endorsed candidate for Congress. Living up to his motto, “Winners never quit and quitters never win,” Steve has just passed his second anniversary on the campaign trail in his quest to win the congressional seat in California’s 48th District. When you ask Steve if he is getting tired, he still declares he is having the time of his life! Meeting new people, talking politics and building a progressive movement feeds his soul.

“I wish every red district in the country had a Steve Young,” said PDA Executive Director Tim Carpenter. “He’s in it for the long haul and he’s in it to win—on a progressive platform we are proud to support.”

Steve has already brought his campaign manager, Marion Pack, back on payroll to begin gearing up for the 2008 election. Marion, a longtime grassroots organizer, is committed to expanding their precinct captain-based campaign across the district. It is the neighbor-to-neighbor approach that moved Steve 12 percentage points above the 27.8% Democratic registration of the district in the 2006 election.

The votes for Steve to win are out there. People just need to know there is a viable alternative running against incumbent Rep. John Campbell, a yes-man for the Bush Administration. Campbell is so tied to Bush’s coattails that he was among the minority fringe of 24 congressmembers who voted on July 25 against HR 2929, Barbara Lee’s bill banning permanent military bases in Iraq. Like Bush, it is clear that if it were up to Campbell, our troops would NEVER leave Iraq.

Efforts to expand Steve’s base are well under way. There are already three “Meet Steve” socials taking place in the next six weeks. On Saturday, Sept. 22, Steve will be hosting a day-long Campaign/Precinct Captain Training for precinct leaders and volunteers. All local PDA people are welcome. Contact the HQ at 949-640-4400. It will also be a chance for people to see the new and expanded campaign headquarters. It will be just downstairs from the old office, and it offers lots of new space to build a winning progressive campaign.
