Sherrod Brown Turns Ohio Senate Seat Blue!

By Mary Nichols-Rhodes, PDA Ohio

PDA endorsed candidate for U.S. Senate from Ohio, Sherrod Brown, defeated Republican Mike DeWine on Tuesday, turning that red seat to blue. “Today in Ohio, in the middle of America, the middle class won,” said Senator-elect Sherrod Brown, in his victory speech in Cleveland on Tuesday.

Brown fought hard for the working men and women of Ohio as a U.S. Congressman for 14 years, and now, in the Senate with a newly Democratic majority, will be an even more effective leader for progressive change.

A lot of people told Brown he couldn’t win as a progressive. Strongly advised to be middle-of-the-road, to not be himself, and to be cautious, Brown chose instead to wear his progressive label proudly. “It’s a risk worth taking to stand up for what you believe,” he said repeatedly.

In September, Brown received the ”Backbone Award” at the Tallmadge Democratic Unity Rally hosted by the Tallmadge Democratic Club, co-sponsored by two PDA chapters (the Ohio Progressive Action Coalition and the Portage Democratic Coalition). He was honored for his monumental efforts to stop CAFTA. The award was presented by PDA National Director Tim Carpenter, on behalf of the Backbone Campaign, with speeches of praise and thanks from AFL-CIO Tri-County Labor’s John Wagner and United Steel Workers Local 2L leader Dave Prentice.

Brown continued his support of labor on the campaign trail when he walked the picket line Nov. 4 with USW-2L workers striking Goodyear in Akron. Noting the shortcomings of the “safety net” for working Americans, Brown said, “This strike is about protecting retirees... about failed trade agreements and about health care.”

It was a tough campaign. His opponent’s war chest was more than double that of Brown’s, and the negative TV ads were plentiful. But PDA chapter members worked hard to get the word out that Sherrod Brown stands up for the people. Untold hours of phone banking, literature drops, canvassing, parade walking, billboarding, and fundraising played a significant role in Brown’s win on Tuesday. Brown said, “You as activists have made a difference. Understand that you have power because people listen to you, because you care about this. Your activism has not just changed this state, it’s changed each one of you, as you continue to fight for social and economic justice.”

Brown pledged Tuesday night, to fight for a higher minimum wage, for embryonic stem cell research, for affordable healthcare for all Americans, to fix “No Child Left Behind,” to make tuition affordable for middle class families again, to make Ohio the “Silicon Valley” of alternative energy and stop the policies dictated by the oil industry, and to end the occupation in Iraq.

Ohio voters replaced a multitude of Republicans with Democrats on Tuesday, electing Ted Strickland governor; Jennifer Brunner secretary of state; Richard Cordray treasurer; and Marc Dann attorney general. Strickland’s congressional seat was filled by Democrat Charlie Wilson and Brown’s congressional seat by Democrat and labor supporter Betty Sutton. Republican Rep. Bob Ney was replaced by Democrat Zack Space, and long-standing PDA friend and supporter, PDA endorsed candidate Rep. Dennis Kucinich defeated his opponent handily with 77% of the vote. All in all, a blue sweep for Ohio!

This senatorial victory -- and the Ohio Statehouse victories -- represent hope for the people of Ohio and of the nation. The victory also marks the beginning of the hard work that lies ahead for all of us, to continue our fight to build the progressive movement here in Ohio and across this nation. PDA looks forward to working with Sherrod Brown in these efforts.
