Clint Curtis is changing the tide in Florida

October 28, 2006, Cocoa, FL

I feel like I'm stranded on a sandbar
Stuck in my tracks like a street car
Playin' it for all that it's worth
I'm just payin' for my sins on earth

So goes Jimmy Buffet’s song stranded on a sandbar, and that is how progressives in Florida have felt for too many years, but sandbars shift, and we can sense that a possible tidal wave is coming. Never mind that Florida Democrats are running in most congressional districts, until now political pundits gave all but two candidates little chance at getting elected.

Enter Clint Curtis, the candidate endorsed by Progressive Democrats of America. With little money and the power of his convictions he has, with other PDA endorsed candidates in the state turned the tide, and the rubberstamp incumbents are no longer feeling safe. "The race for the U.S. House of Representatives in Florida's 24th District is a virtual toss-up. Incumbent Tom Feeney holds the slimmest of leads over challenger Clint Curtis, 45 percent to 43 percent, with one in ten (10 percent) undecided," noted a new Zogby poll.

Clint Curtis a computer programmer has now tied GOP Congressman Tom Feeney for the congressional seat and he leads by 11 points among independent voters. Once thought to be a "safe incumbent”, Feeney, who sits in the Financial Services Committee of the House, has seen his advantage disappear like water between the fingers, even when he holds a huge financial advantage provided by his party and corporate backers mostly from the finance, insurance and real estate sectors. Curtis's grassroots campaign has been very effective in spite of a lack of support from Democratic Party organizations.

Like other GOP incumbents, Feeney, sensing Clint’s threat resorted to a smear campaign that has backfired, by attracting more attention to his challenger’s multi issues campaign, focusing on the right to vote and ending the war in Iraq. Clint has since earned the endorsement of the Daytona Beach News Journal and the story of his struggle to unmask Feeney’s vote rigging has been told in a newly released, DVD “Truth in The Booth”.
