The Progressive Democrats of Los Angeles have overwhelmingly endorsed Cynthia Rodriguez Matthews in the CA 26th Congressional District race against Republican Rep. David Dreier. We were impressed with her strong position against the war and believe that her professional background in environmental management will help make her a leader in Congress for alternative energy sources. She has committed to closing the loopholes that allow corporations to pollute the environment and vows to fight for the rights of all working Americans to ensure competitive and fair living wages, healthcare benefits, and retirement packages. She believes that restructuring of CAFTA and NAFTA is a necessary component in solving immigration concerns. And she is committed to finding a viable solution to the disintegration of the health care system.
Matthews as a candidate has a very strong base, in part because she ran against Dreier two years ago. With a less-than-shoestring budget, she managed to get 43% of the vote, the most of any Democrat who has run against Dreier. Returning for a rematch this year, she won the primary and has continued her serious campaign as a progressive candidate. The most recent polling information out of Washington puts Matthews at 45%-48% so this has again become a very viable race. Combine this with a 16% congressional approval rating (NBC/Wall Street Journal) and she will win with serious financial support in these closing days before the election. This is the best opportunity ever for Democrats to take this district that stretches from La Canada on the west to Ranch Cucamonga and north into the San Bernardino mountain communities.
