PDA Endorses Climate Emergency Action in Washington, D.C.

February 10, 2009

On March 2, a vast coalition of concerned citizens will blockade the coal-fired power plant that serves the U.S. Capitol to serve notice that we will no longer accept business as usual that expands the use of coal--known to be a leading cause of climate change. This mass action will take place in conjunction with POWER SHIFT--a gathering of thousands of youth climate activists.

Please join us as we travel by train to Washington, D.C. to take part in the urgent nonviolent action convened by poet, Wendell Berry and Bill McKibben  the educator and leader in the movement for climate sanity. The action is being led and organized by dozens of leading environmental, religious, human rights, peace and justice organizations.

Help us build the movement to halt coal-fired climate change.

The climate emergency is real and imminent but our political systems will prove incapable of evolving to meet the challenge of fundamentally retooling our global priorities without a very strong push from the people. In the United States and around the world we must organize and take concerted action to ensure rapid change or face planetary disaster.

In the US, the stage is set for change. President Obama is sending positive signals; yet all his intelligence, charm, and sincerity will be for naught unless we build a powerful movement that insists all our leaders act to protect the earth and the lives of our children and all the generations to come. We the people must power this movement from the roots to insure that leaders from around the world have no choice but to break through politics as usual to radically redesign energy infrastructure and change consumption habits over the next several decades.

This December, representatives from around the world meet in Copenhagen, Denmark with the goal of hammering out an effective agreement to drastically reduce CO2 emissions. Success will require a formula that wins the active support of countries across the spectrum of economic development because it equitably distributes the sacrifices and opportunities inherent in moving to a greener, leaner economy. A powerful and growing movement in the United States will be an essential part of that equation.

Please join us on the train to Washington and help us build this movement for change.
