Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, Matthew Gerbasi came of age in a good Catholic home, in an environment that instilled values that will stay with him for life. But it was not necessarily the more traditional Catholic values that the family drew from; what was important to them were things like social justice and equal human rights, such as the right to good health care, a fundamental, basic need.
Matthew attended the University of Detroit at Mercy for several years but was unable to decide on a major. So he moved to Austin, Texas and then spent several years hitchhiking across the country. Eventually, he ended up back in Detroit, immersing himself in an exploding local 'techno' scene as a successful writer and photographer. Years later, as an artist and writer living in Los Angeles, Matthew is now, at the ripe age of 30, immersed in the world of political activism.
Always progressive in his political, social and world views, Matthew was driven into activism after the theft of the 2000 presidential election in Florida. Now, several years later, alongside Progressive Democrats of America, he is devoting his full attention to taking back Congress in November 2006 and introducing Articles of Impeachment for President Bush and Vice-President Cheney. "The major plan of action is clear," says Matthew. "Progressives must present a united front on the issue of Impeachment. And, with the incomprehensible amount of corruption within our government coupled with the disastrous consequences of their actions, there has never been a more necessary time for the use of Impeachment. In my opinion, our democracy is at stake."
As PDA's National Coordinator of the newly formed Impeachment Working Group, Matthew hopes that by connecting people across the country through this active network, the message and actions of the Impeachment Movement will have more clarity and coordination. "We will work to have our message resonate with our allies in Washington," said Matthew. "We will do this by creating a cohesive strategy within Progressive Democrats of America and among its vast network of partners in the progressive movement."
