Director's Report March 17, 2006

By Tim Carpenter, PDA National Director

Dear Friends,

These are exciting times for PDA. We wanted to take a minute to celebrate the little victories with you!

The tide is slowly beginning to turn.

Political fortunes appear to be rising for Democrats. This week I will be in Chicago for the closing days of the Christine Cegelis race where we have a real chance to win and defeat the political machine in Chicago and the inside-the-beltway democrats.

After the election in Chicago, I will be traveling to Ohio with PDA Board Chair Mimi Kennedy and PDA Board Member Cindy Sheehan for a four-day swing through Cleveland and Akron as part of the PDA Organize, Mobilize and Deliver the Progressive Vote 2006 Tour.

I wanted to share with you the good news following my recent trips to New York and Washington, DC.

In New York last week, we organized seven events as part of our Organize, Mobilize and Deliver the Progressive Vote 2006 Tour. The result of that trip has been the birth of new PDA chapters all over the state.

On Wednesday, I traveled to the capitol in anticipation of the vote on the supplemental war budget and in support of the efforts of PDA National Board Member Rep. Conyers to organize support for censure of President Bush and Vice President Cheney. Today, 32 members support Rep. Conyers’ effort! Please take action here. We are excited that Sen. Russ Feingold, D-Wis., has joined the effort in the Senate.

Yesterday, 71 members of the House voted against the war and together we succeeded in passing an amendment introduced by Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-Oakland, CA) that will prohibit the use of funds to enter into basing agreements that would lead to a permanent military presence in Iraq.

We have been working for a year with PDA National Board Member Rep. Lee, who last year introduced H.Con.Res. 197, to make it "the policy of the United States not to enter into any base agreement with the Government of Iraq that would lead to a permanent United States military presence in Iraq." As Rep. Lee said during the vote, "In adopting this amendment, we can take the target off our troops' backs by sending a strong and immediate signal to the Iraqi people, the insurgents, and the international community that the United States has no designs on Iraq." The tide is turning!

Thank you for all you have given – and continue to give – to PDA.

We need your continued help, energy and financial support to keep the heat on. Please consider becoming a sustainer or help with a contribution to support the upcoming PDA events in Chicago, Cleveland and Akron.

Together we are making a difference!

In peace,
Tim Carpenter
Executive Director
